The “Capital in Motion” conference was held in Belgrade yesterday, bringing together representatives of regulatory authorities, financial institutions, investment funds and companies, as well as finance professionals. Marko Janković, Chairman of the Securities Commission of the Republic of Serbia, also participated in the conference.
The Chairman of the Commission took part in the opening panel, “The Longevity of Capital”, alongside Lazo Ostojić, Director of the Belgrade Stock Exchange, Dr Una Sikimić, President of the Executive Board of ALTA Bank, Stanislava Petković, General Director of Vista Rica a.d. Beograd, and Velimir Lukić, Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade. The panel was moderated by Vesna Damjanić, editor and television journalist.
The panel addressed issues relevant to the long-term development of Serbia’s capital market, with particular emphasis on the importance of investor confidence, the development of the regulatory framework and institutional infrastructure, as well as the creation of conditions for greater use of various forms of investment and financing through the capital market.
Particular attention was devoted to the process of further aligning the domestic regulatory framework with the European Union acquis. It was noted that, from the Commission’s perspective, the final stage of the alignment process has been completed and that the proposed legislative solutions are currently under review by the European Commission. Further alignment should contribute to creating regulatory conditions that will enable investors and companies to operate in the domestic market within a framework comparable to that of the capital markets of EU Member States.
The panel also discussed the level of development of domestic capital market institutions and their capacity to monitor and supervise market activities as one of the prerequisites for the stable and sustainable development of the market. The discussion also covered the further development of investment culture in Serbia and the increasing use of instruments and mechanisms commonly applied in developed capital markets, including initial public offerings (IPOs) and investment funds.
The aim of the “Capital in Motion” conference was to foster dialogue on the development of Serbia’s capital market, the role of the stock exchange, funds and institutional investors, as well as opportunities to mobilise capital currently held outside investment funds.
